This section explains the purpose of this site and thoughts of the members of the Super Nintendo Zone on why Super Nintendo is better to own than any other system nowadays. Please note that comparisons below of the SNES and the "current" popular systems is probably outdated since the below mentioned "next" generation of systems is not really "next" anymore. New systems are being released all the time... :-)
Z.L.O.'s opinion:
The site was created on June 19, 1998 by Z.L.O., me. :) After several tries of making a good Super Nintendo page, I've finally stopped and decided not to bother again, but then I just couldn't stand doing nothing about the fact that the good old Super Nintendo is getting forgotten by the gamers who once used to spend hours playing it.
I'd like to share my opinion with you, the visitors, about why Super Nintendo is the system to own! Just think about it for a second. Is it really better to own a 32/64 bit system and pay up to $60 US for a game when one could pay the same price of a single "next gen system" game for a brand new Super Nintendo system, or split that same price in half and buy a used Super Nintendo system!? I've been to places like Cash Converters and I've seen great deals on used Super Nintendo games, like choose any 3 games for $10 US, amazing! Sure, the graphics and sound of the Super Nintendo 16 bit games are not the same in quality as the next gen ones, but the gameplay is what counts! Look at all the great games like Super Metroid, or Donkey Kong Country series, or Yoshi's Island...ireplaceable! Have you played Yoshi's Story on N64? Bah! Garbage! Nothing compared to Yoshi's Island on Super Nintendo.
Some people say that Super Nintendo games are childish. Don't listen to them! For instance, N64 has those same Super Nintendo and NES heroes in its games, but usually wrapped in an eyecandy 3d world. Speaking of the next gen systems, there's a good reason why you should avoid them. That reason, as I mentioned a few lines ago, is called "eyecandy"! Yes, every single game looks like as if the programmers wanted to prove the technical abilities of a system and nothing else but that! The gameplay is there, but very rarely is of any good in a next gen game. Now don't get me wrong, there are good next gen games out there, but they don't come out very often. During the 16 bit days, lots of games usually turned out to be quite fun because on the Super Nintendo the programmers have had only 32 megabits of cartridge storage for their games so they had really put a lot of effort to make everything in tip top shape for us the consumers in those 32 megabits, but today when you give them a 640 megabyte CD-ROM to store games on, they fill it up with eyecandy such as FMV (full motion movies) and fancy stuff like that. They very rarely hit the spot both in gameplay and graphics in a game, not that they don't care, it just turns out to be like that. Don't believe me? Compare the systems and judge them yourself and I guarantee that you would not be much more impressed between lets say Sony PlayStation and Super Nintendo.
So basically those are the reasons that made me decide on making a Super Nintendo dedicated page, and why I think and strongly advise you to pick a Super Nintendo if you ever get any doubts about which one to buy. That's my opinion of course, but hey, I'm only trying to help. :)
Lord Nazerous' opinion:
I've had my Super Nintendo for a while now. I bought it
because..at the time, it was the best system to buy. Recently I bought
an N64, for $150 dollars (US) and my friend bought the PSX, for $150
as well. We bought the two systems figuring that when a cool game
comes, we would be able to play it, no matter which system it came out
for.
For about about two months I was content with all the games I
had (and he had). Final Fantasy VII was one of the first games my
friend got for his PSX, and it's a good game...but not as good as
Final Fantasy III. (Which is my favorite game.)
After two months of playing the PSX, and N64, I walked into a
store that sells only used video games. I was looking at the N64 games
when something had caught my eye..something I had been looking for,
for a long time. It was the very rare, but very good Final Fantasy II
! It was only $30..and had all the instructions and everything to it!
I dusted off the old SNES and started to play. Then I realized that
the PSX and N64 Role-Playing games stunk. That the few they had on
their sytems were terrible games. I also remembered how many RPG's
were on the SNES..and how good each and everyone of them was.
I haven't bought another N64 game since, and don't plan to.
Recently I've been buying so many SNES games..that I don't know what
to do with them all. The graphics on the Super Nintendo aren't
spectacular, let's face it. But clever developers can get around this,
to create some stunning scenes.
The Playstation or PSX, has huge CD space, and a great graphics
capacity, but it takes forever to load! Buying a Cosole system is
supposed to make it so you don't have to wait for games to load! (like
they do on the computer) If it has to load why not just buy a computer
game? They can do a lot more on a computer then a console system. The
games on the PSX are only mediocre. Once in a while they get an ok
game for it, but when they do, they either goug the price, or it can't
be found.
The Nintendo 64, or N64 doesn't have any loading! But the sad
part about it is, that besides a few good games, there's nothing on
the system. Nintendo keeps making games that are 64 bit counter parts
to SNES games. Take for example, Mario Kart, and Mario Kart 64. Sure
the 64 bit version looks more stunning, but game play wise it stinks!
There's hardly any imagination to the courses, and the computer cheats
SOOOOO bad....
One last thing... None of the Next Generation systems come with
games...you have to buy them seperatly.. so for the price of an N64
with Mario64 ($170-$190 in the US) you could have a New SNES system
with Yoshi's Island ($50-$70) and the entire Star Wars Trilogy games
($60-$70) and still have more money than you would if ou bought the
N64 or the PSX! And when buy a new system always remember: SUPER
NINTENDO GAMES HAVE BETTER GAME PLAY! (And that's where it counts!)
